"Narrator Giordan Diaz has a dreamy quality to his voice, perfect for this reimagined version of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth. After nearly drowning, 16-year-old Andres made a bargain with Death to avoid dying. Now living in Miami with bitterly divorced parents, Andres finds refuge with his friends Liora and Renee. The trio form a romance, which comes to a halt when Liora dies in a car accident. Determined to bring Liora back, Renee and Andres travel to the underworld. Diaz has an expressive voice with a raspy quality that works well with the range of emotions in the story. He aptly narrates in Portuguese and Spanish when necessary. Using changes in pacing and tone, he conveys the emotional roller coaster ride in the underworld. A.M. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2025]

Though this is a long audiobook, stellar narration by Giordan Diaz and Stacy Gonzalez keeps listeners engaged. The story is told from alternating perspectives. Margot Ortega, voiced by Gonzalez, has it all--a well-known family, money, a good career, and a perfect fiancé. When she suffers a panic attack on her wedding day and calls it off, she spends the night in a bar, dancing and drowning her sorrows. When she returns the next day, she makes a connection with bartender David Sánchez, voiced by Diaz. He persuades her to pretend to be his girlfriend, and their adventure begins, with narration matching their distinctive personalities. As the plot gets more complicated, listeners will find themselves invested in what comes next and will even be able to choose their own ending. Cuban American narrator Giordan Diaz's mastery of the Spanish phrases and names in this historical novel, set in Cuba in 1980, adds authenticity to this excellent performance. Sixth grader Hector and his brother must publicly support the communist regime while keeping their mother's plans to leave Cuba and reunite with their exiled father a secret. Each character has a distinct voice that makes the plot easy to follow. Diaz changes his tone throughout to reflect the characters' emotions and keeps perfect pace for the plot. The anger that government supporters feel towards Hector and his family, as well as the family's moments of joy and hope, are equally palpable. This dynamic performance is sure to move listeners. In the small town of Soledad, Texas, in 1952, 12-year-old Pineda encounters a young alien when she crash-lands on his family's pecan farm. Unfortunately, the U.S. military has just taken over the town for a war games exercise. Giordan Diaz gives a winning performance as Pineda, communicating his humor and kindness and switching easily between English and Spanish, which Pineda speaks with his Cuban mom. Chapters alternate between Pineda's point of view and Luisa's--that's what Pineda calls the alien, since he can't pronounce her name in her language. P.J. Morgan gives Luisa an appropriately nervous, hesitant voice as she slowly learns English. As Pineda and his friends try to reunite Luisa with her parents, the chorus of voices for other characters who chime in during the story's climax reinforces the message about the power of community. Warm, funny, and timely. J.M.D. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine [Published: FEBRUARY 2025]
